Arthritis Of The Knee

There are many reasons for knee pain. Athletes frequently experience pain in the knee due to over training, insufficient warm up before exercise, or not stretching before exercise. If you are over 65 however, you are most likely experiencing arthritis of the knee.

Knee arthritis may be accompanied by swelling and pain in the knee joint. Stiffness in the knees, especially first thing in the morning is also an indication you may have arthritis of the knee. Another symptom of knee arthritis is a grinding sensation in the knee joint accompanied by feeling of weakness and a partial loss of mobility.

Osteoarthritis, or wear-and-tear arthritis, is the most common type of arthritis to attack the knee, because the knee joint is one of the most common joints affected by osteoarthritis.

Who is at risk of arthritis of the knee?

Older people are particularly prone to knee arthritis and those who experience knee pain without any other obvious cause should be tested for osteoarthritis. If you've been a runner or played a lot of sport in your younger days, particularly football or soccer, then arthritis of the knee is a definite possibility.

Overweight people put more stress on the knee joints which can lead to arthritis of the knee and make it a lot harder to move around as the knees are supporting more weight than they were designed for.

How to diagnose arthritis of the knee.

Diagnosis is fairly simple and consists of a physical examination and X-rays. Your doctor may ask some questions about your lifestyle and what type of symptoms you are experiencing. In rare cases a blood test may be necessary, but only if rheumatoid arthritis is suspected.

Treating arthritis of the knee.

If you're overweight, then losing those extra kilos is the best thing you could do. If certain activities – for instance gardening – are hurting your knees then stop doing them for a while or find some alternative ways to do them. If getting around is hard, some type of walking aid may be a good idea for you.

Exercises for knee arthritis.

Exercise is fabulous for all kinds of arthritis. If you find it hard to walk then swimming is a good alternative. Exercise will strengthen the muscles around the joints as well as the bones themselves.

Steroid injections

Injections directly into the knee joint are probably safer than taking arthritis drugs by mouth. Even so these should be spaced out to 2-3 monthly intervals.

Natural medication.

This should be the goal to ensure safety and enhance your general health. Even if you've been on steroids or other medication, it's possible to gradually cut this down or cut it out completely by substituting natural medication which can be very effective.

Natural remedies  usually work better if the ingredients are combined. This creates a synergistic effect.
