Help For Dog Arthritis
It's sad when your dog develops arthritis. He's been your faithful friend for
many years, now it's time to show him you care. Fortunately there's plenty of
help for dog arthritis when we know where to look. Here a few ideas on how you can help your dog stay comfortable and
relatively pain free.
Dog arthritis symptoms
How can you tell if your dog has arthritis? The surest sign is a limp. This
usually develops slowly and in one leg. If your dog suddenly develops a
limp, it more likely to be due to injury.
He's not too interested in walks any more. If your dog used to pester you for
walks, but now he's become less than enthusiastic, it's probably because walking
causes him discomfort. If he struggles to climb stairs, you'll know for sure.
Do his movements appear stiff, especially in the morning or after exercise?
Arthritis in dogs causes stiffness which can disappear gradually during the
day.
He doesn't like being touched any more. If he has sore muscles and joints,
he'll probably shy away when you go to stroke him.
Treatment for arthritis in dogs
Luckily there are many ways we can help our older canine friends. The first
is to make sure his bed in comfortable. An arthritic dog shouldn't have to sleep
on a cold hard floor. An old mattress would work well or an old armchair - so
long as it's not too far off the ground. Thick foam rubber is also suitable,
make sure it's raised slightly off the ground.
Exercise will strengthen his muscles so they can support his joints better.
He probably won't agree! But exercise 3 or 4 times a week is one of the best
things he can do.
Make sure he's not overweight. An overweight dog will put more stress on his
joints making it harder for him to move around. If you can't feel his ribs, that
means he's carrying too much weight.
Canine arthritis and diet
Your dog will be heaps better off if he's not overweight. Consider what
you're feeding him now - does he get a lot of leftovers? Human food may be
suitable for a young energetic dog but not for an older animal. Change him over
to one of the good light dry dog foods available. Give him plenty of water as
dried foods will make him thirsty
Arthritis meds for dogs
Arthritis in dogs isn't very different to arthritis in humans. You can obtain
prescription medication for your dog's arthritis, but it will have the same
nasty side effects as it does on us humans. they're also quite expensive.
Natural
arthritis medication for dogs is a better and
safer option, it can strengthen you pet's immune
system, eliminate toxins and preserve his
skeletal system, as well as improving his
general health.
Muscle and Joint Support is an
excellent choice for pets suffering from
arthritis, rheumatism and degenerative joint
disease and can also be used as a tonic and
preventative in animals known to be susceptible
to joint and bone ailments.
We
first noticed that our family dog was
limping and favouring the right side last
winter and since then she has also
become very sensitive to being touched
on the back. Our vet recommended your
Joint Support Caps and we have seen a
big change. She means so much to us and
we are very grateful to PetAlive for
this great product!”
